How Provincial Governments were created

The story of how Provincial Governments came into existence

In this video, His Excellency, Chief John Momis talks about the struggles of the people of Bougainville to reaffirm their Independence as an Indigenous nation with-in the modern State of Papua New Guinea during the transition from colonial rule to self rule.

The Bougainvilleans had asked Chief Momis to resign from the House of Assembly, as PNG’s Parliament was known then, and prepare the island nation for Independence. After having their call for Independence rejected by the United Nations, Bougainvilleans appointed Father Momis, as he was then, to lead a team to negotiate with the National Government headed by Chief Minister Micheal Somare, as he was then.

The negotiations with the National Government led to the creation of Provincial Governments. The North Solomons Provincial Government was created for the people of Bougainville.
